The Date of the A.G.M.

Please note that we have changed the date of the 2010 AGM. This will be held on Wednesday June 16th at the Rothley Centre. Earlier LCBA Calendars had the date as June 2nd.

The Tangerine Book

The EBU has issued a new publication called the Tangerine Book, it is a simplified and more accessible version of the Orange Book and if you wish to peruse it, follow this link which will open a PDF document at the EBU website. There is a slight catch - if you want to read the detailed regulations on Permitted Agreements then you should also read the Appendix to the Orange Book (another EBU PDF file).

Latest Club Focus

The latest edition (February 2010) of Club Focus, produced by the EBU, is available as a PDF document from the following address: www.ebu.co.uk/cf/documents/Currentedition.pdf

Arthur Bloxham

We regret to announce the death of Arthur Bloxham on Friday 29 January at the age of 78. Arthur had been active in Staffordshire bridge until recently (he was President of Stafford Bridge Club). Before moving to Staffordshire, Arthur was prominent in Leicestershire bridge and his name appears on the honour rolls for the Josephs Bowl, The Cole Cup, The Buckby Cup, the Hyman Crammer Trophy and the Leicestershire Cup. Arthur taught at Burleigh College in Loughborough alongside that other well-known player, Gordon Broad. Arthur served the LCBA Committee as Tournament Secretary between 1966 and 1973. He was also sometime Chairman of County Club.

Congratulations to Jim Mason

Jim, partnered by Phil King, won the Swiss Pairs competition at the Scottish Bridge Union Gold Cup Congress in Peebles on December 11th - 13th 2009.

The Third Tournament Focus

The third edition of Tournament Focus, produced by the EBU, is available as a web page here. This EBU e-newsletter is issued quarterly with the aims of providing information on future EBU events, updates from the Tournament Committee and articles of interest to tournament players. Following feedback, it is hoped that a web page rather than a PDF document will be easier to read.

EBU Shareholders Meeting

Robert Northage and John Wilcox attended the EBU shareholders Annual General meeting on October 7th. The meeting approved changes to the bye laws which will permit the introduction of Pay to Play in April. The latest forecast is that around 590 out of 900 clubs will re-affliate to the EBU next year. The EBU is confident that it will remain financially viable. The total membership will be between 35,000 and 40,000. 16 out of 19 Leicestershire affiliated clubs will remain affiliated after P2P is introduced.

The meeting was told that the EBU was sometimes asked to intervene in disputes between players and their clubs. Whilst the EBU did have certain powers in this area it never became involved until both parties had exhausted the remedies set out in local constitutions. All LCBA clubs are urged to ensure that they have an adequate and robust procedure in their constitution for handling complaints about behaviour and associated appeals. The EBU has provided a sample club constitution in PDF form. Clubs might find this a useful resource.
