| Brief History In the early days of the Association there were two Leicester(shire) evening newspapers. In 1961 the Leicester Evening Mail created a competition for bridge players living in Leicestershire. In this annual competition, run by an independent committee, teams-of-four competed for the "Leicester Evening Mail Bridge Team Trophy" and prizes donated by the paper. During the third season the paper ceased publication and the trophy was given to the LCBA. In June 1964 the committee resolved to continue the competition in basically the same form. And alone of our teams-of-four competitions the format and rules remain essentially the same, aggregate scoring and open to non-members, to this day. They also decided in 1964 that the trophy should be renamed as the "Leicestershire Cup" (as we have called it ever since) and instructed the Treasurer to have it so engraved. The records give no indication why it was never re-engraved. |
