Brief History

On 28 January 1948 it was decided there should also be a competition for teams of four. Sydney Josephs offered to donate a silver cup. The first competition was held in the autumn, and thus the Josephs Bowl was first presented in 1948.

The Josephs Bowl competition has remained the County Teams of Four Championship ever since although the only consistent format feature is just 'teams of four'. It has variously been almost every combination of multiple teams or knock-out or league pool qualifying for multiple teams or knock-out or league pool finals, with or without seeding or exemptions.

The scoring was originally aggregate, later it was variously aggregate converted to VPs, pure IMPs, IMPs converted to VPs.

The original Josephs Bowl was stolen in 1948. Sydney Josephs gave the association a replacement.
