Playing in a modest pairs competition I am South, the dealer at Love All. Sorting through my
cards I observe the following pretty collection:
Well, I have no alternative but to open 1
. Some players, I know, would count their 20 points
and open 2NT but this is an unnatural practice with a singleton and is a bid of little merit.
Partner responds 1
and I show a good hand by reversing into 2
. In our methods this bid is
forcing but, even if it were not, there is little alternative. A crude punt into 3NT is the bid of a
cloven-hoofed basher and a space-consuming leap to 3
(even if assumed to be a natural bid)
is just going to fog the bidding.
