I am South, the dealer, and open with the obvious bid of 1spade. Partner responds 3NT and I produce the Alert card as this is one of our minor conventions. Partner is showing, in these methods, four card Spade support and about 12-14 points in a flat hand. The advantages of this system is that we can distinguish between a pre-emptive raise to 4spade and a genuine raise to 4spade, allowing me to progress to a slam if my hand were suitable. Well, my actual hand is not going to come anywhere near twelve tricks opposite what amounts to a weak No-trump so, disdaining a possible but eccentric Pass, I bid a quiet 4spade and everybody Passes. It has been a simple auction:

  South        West        North        East
  1spade     Pass       3NT        Pass
  4spade       Pass       Pass       Pass

West leads the heartQ and dummy is about normal for his bidding:      Right Symbol   Down Symbol
