Partner responds 3NT and I produce the Alert card as this is one of our
minor conventions. Partner is showing, in these methods, four card Spade support and about 12-14 points in a flat hand. The
advantages of this system is that we can distinguish between a pre-emptive raise to 4
and a genuine raise to 4
, allowing me to
progress to a slam if my hand were suitable. Well, my actual hand is not going to come anywhere near twelve tricks opposite what
amounts to a weak No-trump so, disdaining a possible but eccentric Pass, I bid a quiet 4
and everybody Passes. It has been a
