The critical feature is that partner has bid 2
freely. With a minimum
opener and five Spades a good player never rebids 2
in these positions
(and my partner is certainly a good player). I can take it that partner
has either a good suit or a good hand (and possibly both!) so Pass is
out of the question. Even though North's Spades will be good it does not
mean the hand will play well in his suit. A Diamond lead is sure to come
whistling through the A Q and that would be a poor start. My view is
that this is a hand where we might snatch 3NT on minimum values so, to
take the pressure off him I jump to 3NT.
