at Brittania Hotel, Coventry Saturday/Sunday 24th/25th November 2001 The outcome of the draw at 12 noon on Saturday was viewed with some favour. One of the top four and one of the second four of last season's finalists are placed in each of the four groups, then the remaining counties are placed by random draw. As medal winners last February Leicestershire were thus automatically separated from the other leading teams. Moreover the strongest unseeded teams ended up in other groups and although Warwickshire and Lancashire were well fancied, prospects of reaching the final for the third consecutive year appeared bright. After an unexpected 3 - 17 first round loss to Suffolk a 19 - 1 victory over Warwickshire in the second round restored prospects. On the Saturday evening 13 - 7 against Bedfordshire then 6 - 14 against Lancashire left the county 41 - 39 overnight. The leading six teams were all closely packed and with the next match against badly tailed off Cumbria there remained real hopes of ultimate success. However the first Sunday match was like the Saturday one a disaster, a narrow 11 - 9 victory being quite inadequate, and was followed by a 10 - 10 draw with second seeds Northamptonshire. A final 19 - 1 win over Lincolnshire sufficed only to raise the score to 81 - 59 and fourth place. Lancashire and Warwickshire qualified for the final, Suffolk finishing third.
