9th - 10th June 2001 Thirty three counties contested the Pachabo Cup, the Inter-County Teams-of-Four Championship, played at the Moat House, West Bromwich. In a very tight finish, after playing 32 three-board matches Leicestershire and Warwickshire had each amassed 202 points, with the holders Surrey third on 198.5. The rules provide for the tie between the joint leaders to be split on the result of the match between the two counties - and Leicestershire had won that! Leicestershire were represented by Tony Odams & Jim Mason, Paul Bowyer & Peter Harvey and Mel & Megan Starkings; one of the three pairs sitting out in each round. This was the sixth win for Leicestershire in this event. The first three occasions were in the 50's; the more recent ones were in 1979 when the six players included Tony Odams & Paul Bowyer, and in 1992 when just four players were used - these two plus Jim Mason & Peter Harvey. Congratulations on a superb result. |
